Refrigerator Diagnostic Cheat Sheet

Published on July 19, 2026 by Vikram Singh, Refrigeration Engineer

When your double-door refrigerator suddenly stops cooling, it's easy to assume the compressor is broken. However, refrigerator circuits have several low-cost components that can fail first. Use this guide to diagnose basic refrigerator errors before scheduling a technician.

1. Faulty Start Relay

If you hear a clicking sound every few minutes from the back of the refrigerator but the compressor fails to start, the PTC start relay is likely burnt out. Relay replacements are quick and affordable.

2. Frozen Evaporator Coils

If the freezer is freezing food but the fresh food compartment below is warm, it means air channels are blocked by ice. This points to a failed defrost timer, heater, or bi-metal sensor.
